Your Vote Is Worth $25,000

Posted by bigincanada on June 19, 2009

No, we are not running for any government offices, and we are not trying to buy your vote. Although….

On September 22, 2009, the Verge Music Awards will return for their 2nd year on XM Canada (The Verge – XM 87), live-to-air from The Mod Club in Toronto. The winners will be chosen by you, the public, and voting will run from July 1st until August 31st. $25,000 will be awarded to the winners of both “Album of the Year” and “Artist of the Year.” Last year’s winners were none other than The Weakerthans (“Artist of the Year”) and Hey Rosetta! (“Album of the Year”), and the VMAs featured performances by The Stills, Broken Social Scene, and Sebastien Grainger. This year’s performers have not yet been announced, but it will be interesting to see how The Verge plans to top last year.

For more info, check out thevergeonline.com/vma, or tune in to The Verge on XM 87. And don’t forget that it is your civic duty to vote.

Oh! Canada, Vol. 1

Posted by bigincanada on June 12, 2009

Many thanks to the kind people over at “The Line of Best Fit” – an awesome music site based out of the UK – for keeping us up to date about some of the great things that they have going on over there! First and foremost, they have a new section called “Oh! Canada,” which currently features a piece on this year’s Canadian Blast! showcase (Dan Mangan, Ultimate Power Duo, Hey Rosetta!, Arkells, and many, many more) from the Great Escape Festival.

To take things one step further, they have also teamed up with a variety of artists and labels to release a compilation of tracks that they have aptly titled “Oh! Canada, Vol. 1.” Some of the notables on there: Hey Rosetta!, Dan Mangan, and Ohbijou. It is definitely worth checking out, and be sure to send a big thank you to our newly-made friends in the UK – The Line of Best Fit – while you’re over there.

“Next Big Thing”??

Posted by bigincanada on March 29, 2009

You tell me…

From http://soundcloud.com/frontside/black-and-white-lies-radio-edit:

“It’s O.K. if this is the first you’re hearing of Desperate Union, as their ascent has been a rapid one. Essentially it’s a fairy tale rock n’ roll story of an incredibly talented young band (they’re all under 18 years old) being discovered by Grammy nominated super-producer Johnny K (Disturbed, Three Doors Down, Finger Eleven, Staind, Plain White T’s, and many more) and taken under his wing.

Not surprisingly, a band that had shown lots of promise has now turned the corner to become a much talked about ‘next big thing.’

The band has a series of shows coming up, a myspace following of over 150,000, an EP on iTunes and much more on the plate as they’ve just signed with a soon-to-be named very prominent booking agent in Los Angeles. Combine that with a chance meeting with Gene Simmons parlaying into a performance at an upcoming event he’s holding and well, things are underway.

The video will be completed in a few weeks time to give you a better look at the band, but until then, please enjoy their first straight ahead rock single “Black And White Lies”!

Released by: Frontside
Release date: Mar 24, 2009″
